Loved it, loved it, loved it!! What a fantastic read. I have read a few of the book series by Kate Allenton and she never disappoints her readers and that is shown again with the introduction of her new series the Immortal Guardian Mates books.Abigail Elizabeth Monroe is a nobody. She doesn't exist in the world and it is shown through her crumby apartment, her old furniture and the job where she is invisible to the colleagues that surround her. Life couldn't get any worse until the night she is kidnapped from her home and given a multitude of shifter DNA nearly killing her. Abigail did die that night but Elizabeth Hanson, a bad-ass detective with the Shifter Investigation Division took her place.
With the disappearance of shifter and human females, it isn't long before Elizabeth is assigned the case to work undercover in the Glades. A shifter haven which she despises. When her boss tells her she can use her animals to her full advantage and will be staying with his cousins, the case doesn't seem too bad. That all changed the moment she walked into the Honey Pot and saw Rhys Trapp; a bear shifter and her mate. Believing she doesn't have full control of her animals, she fights against the attraction but his understanding and patience begin to crumble her walls as acceptance takes over.
Rhys Trapp recognized Elizabeth as his mate the moment he laid eyes on her but knowing she had a traumatic experience with the change, he knows if he is patient with her then soon she will recognize they are to be together. He already knows he will stop at nothing to protect her but also understands her strong will to do her job.
Throw in some royalty blood lines, another shifter claiming Elizabeth as his, a contract on her head plus someone killing off humans and shifters and what a great story! I cannot wait to read the next book!

I really enjoyed the book. From start to finish, it offers lots of action.
The romance between Elizabeth and Rhys is very well developed. He is a bear shifter that knows his mate needs him and is willing to do wherever she needs. She is struggling with so many changes in her life and the desire to make people pay for what they did.
The story is primarily told from her point of view but Rhys gets to share his feelings at key points. I liked how much he treated her with respect and listened to her. She is strong but needs his support. It really heals her.
There are many surprises in the story and some answers are not provided yet. I am looking forward to reading more books in the series.
First in a series, this book is filled with exciting and unexpected situations. Following a vicious attack and scientific experimentation on her which leads to severe tampering with her DNA and mental well-being, Abigail is rescued, healed, (and taking a different name, Elizabeth--symbolizing her new life as a shifter), re-trained for a new job in the Shifters Investigation Division to bring rogue shifters to justice. Elizabeth encounters Rhys, a bear shifter and bar owner who finds she is his fated mate. One of the main mysteries she works to uncover is the disappearance of four women--unfortunately following a night at Rhys' bar. Key questions involve unraveling all involved and the reasons for the abductions. We also have a fine HEA once Elizabeth and Rhys truly find each other. I found it an interesting, worthwhile read and look forward to the next book in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.
Hard Shift is the first book in Kate Allenton's newest series, Immortal Guardian Mates, and it is fantastic!
Elizabeth Hanson was born a human, but as a young woman in her early 20s, she was attacked and injected with numerous different species of shapeshifters, against her will. She was rescued and nursed back to health by Colton Trapp, who is is now her boss at the Shifters Investigation Division (SID). He trained her to be able to to punish criminal shifters, including those responsible for her attack. Now there are young women missing and the common denominator is a bar run by Trapp's cousins, Rhys, Max, and Dylan. When she meets Rhys he takes one good sniff of her and proclaimed her to be his mate.Rhys and Elizabeth work hard to find the shifters responsible for harming and killing the young women, all while falling in love.
This new series is off to a great start and I can't wait to see whose story is next and see where the story leads us!
This book started out with a bang and didn't let up until the end.
Abigail is sort of a fifth wheel among her co-workers at the beginning of the book. I felt for her in that respect. But that quickly changes when she is kidnapped and stuffed full of weird DNA that makes her shift into any animal.
With the advent of her new shifter abilities, she takes on the name of Elizabeth and goes to work for the police department as a detective for the Shifter Unit. Her boss, Colton, keeps her on her toes and puts her on assignment in the Glades, the last place she wants to be. Meanwhile, Colton knows more about her than he's ever let on, but it is revealed as the book progresses.
Rhys comes into the story when Lizzie is put on the case of trying to find missing women. A bear-shifter, he knows immediately that she is his mate and does everything possible to protect her. His heroic act at the near-end of the story almost had me in tears. It was also a changing point of the story.
This is a fast-paced, mysterious, shifter novel with strong, well-developed characters, an intriguing plot, and mild love scenes. There was more story than sex. That was refreshing.
I gave it four stars because of some minor editing issues at the beginning of the book. Other than that, this book was fantastic!
Love this new series by this author. Loved het Bennett Sisters series but this is new series ive decided is my my favourite and cant wait for the next boom and wondered if Evan will get his own HEA, and there were some unanswered questions but hopefully they will be clarify in the next book. Im dying to find out who the woman with the violet eyes is and what is she if she can block Lizzie's compulsion hmmm.
